內容簡介: This collection of essays discusses the first commercial encounters between a China on the verge of social transformation and a fledgling United States struggling to assert itself globally as a distinct nation after the Revolutionary War with Great Britain. In early accounts of these encounters, commercial activity enabled cross-cultural curiosity, communication and even mutual respect. But it also involved confrontation as ambitious American traders pursued lucrative opportunities, often embracing British-style imperialism in the name of 'free trade.'

博客來書店The book begins in the 1780s with the arrival in Canton of the very first American ship The Empress of China and moves through the nineteenth century, with Caleb Cushing negotiating the Treaty of Wangxia in Macao after the First Opium War and, at the century's close, Secretary of State John Hay forging the Open Door Policy (1899). Considering Sino-American relations in their broader context, the nine essays are attuned to the activities of competing European traders, especially the British, in Canton, Macao, and the Pearl River Delta.

(健康醫療網／記者郭庚儒報導)>能夠再次行走是每位癱瘓患者的夢想，去年國內引進機器人腳至今，已成功幫助7名脊髓損傷患者回復站立、行走功能。醫師指出，脊損傷友只要雙腳穿上機器人腳、背著電池電腦主機，使用手腕上遠端遙控控制器，就能像鋼鐵人一樣，靠自己站起來，可謂革命性的發明。
>機器人腳可模擬常人行走功能
>機器人腳是以色列研發，提供脊髓損傷患者，雙下肢穿戴活動機械動力外骨骼系統。桃園長庚醫院復健中心鄧復旦醫師表示，透過穿戴式支撐裝置、電腦控制系統以及動態感應器，機器人腳可模擬出如同常人走動的腿部移動模式，做出交替的自然行走動作，無論是坐到站、開始行走或站到坐，都可以輕鬆設定，並可輕鬆地轉彎或立即停下，行走速度高達每小時2.4公里，相當於正常人輕鬆散步的速度。
>回復站立行走功能　降低併發症發生
>國外多項研究發現，使用機器人腳的傷友，可預防骨質密度流失，及促進腸道、泌尿功能和心肺適能，並可減少體脂肪、疼痛及痙攣。鄧復旦指出，傷友長期下肢癱瘓不能活動，容易出現骨質流失、骨質疏鬆的問題，重拾站立行走功能，能夠使肌肉活化、體能提升。更重要的是，不需坐在輪椅上仰頭看別人，視覺回到正常人水平，也更有自信。
>半數脊髓損傷患者適用機器人腳
>據統計，全台脊髓損傷患者約2萬6千多名，完全癱瘓占5至6成、不完全損傷約4成，其中有半數以上可以適用機器人腳。鄧復旦觀察發現，原本連坐都坐不穩的傷友，每天訓練2小時、平均接受20小時的訓練，就能站立在室內行走；40小時能到戶外行走；60小時以上，傷友能行動自如，臉上有笑容、有自信，且煥然一新、容光煥發，人也變得強壯了。
>嚴重骨鬆痙攣程度　需進一步評估
>鄧復旦主任建議，脊髓損傷患者接受照射下半身X光及骨密度檢查，評估骨骼排列是否正常、是否有骨折；若T評分超過-2.5，上半身柔軟度或下半身痙攣程度太過嚴重，必須進一步接受治療，才適用機器人腳。
>脊髓損傷患者日常生活需要別人照顧，一年照顧費用超過30萬，鄧復旦說，傷友若是沒有生產力，經濟損失至少近百萬，不但影響一生，長遠眼光來看，對社會生產、經濟發展都有影響，若能及早使用機器人腳將身體狀況保存到最好，期待未來醫學進步後有機會回到正常身體機能。
